U.S. Marshal David Barnett, District of New Mexico

The Honorable David O. Barnett, Jr. was nominated by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., confirmed by the United States Senate, and appointed on August 23, 2024, to serve as the United States Marshal (USM) for the District of New Mexico (D/NM).  

As USM, he is responsible for directing the activities of the D/NM to include leading and directing operations, the security and protection of the federal judiciary and United States Courts, criminal investigations, fugitive apprehensions, execution of federal court orders and other law enforcement activities.

USM Barnett began his law enforcement career as an employee of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1990. While at the FBI, USM Barnett served as a Supervisory Special Agent-in-Charge of Counterintelligence in the Albuquerque Field Office and Special Agent in the Washington, DC, Field Office. Prior to becoming an FBI Special Agent in 2006, he was an FBI Intelligence Analyst and support staff in the National Capital Region from 1990 to 2006.

USM Barnett received multiple commendations for exemplary service throughout his career, including an FBI Commendation for Exceptional Service while deployed in a combat zone for his service in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and an FBI Director’s award for Outstanding Service in Diversity and Inclusion for promoting equality, fairness, and inclusion within the workforce and community at large.
